Macaparana took his name from the town of Pernambuco, Brazil, where he was born in 1952 under the real name of José Souza Oliveira Filho. Painter and self-taught sculptor, he gave his first solo exhibition in Recife in the year 1970. From 1973 he lives and works in São Paulo.
He has exhibited his works in the most important art galleries of Brazil, Mexico, Japan, New York and London; besides, some of them integrate the collection of many museums and private collections as well. He is currently an artist from the Dan Galeria of São Paulo.
He participated in SP Arte (with Dan Galeria, 2007-2011, São Paulo), arteBA (with Galería Jorge Mara-La Ruche, 2008-2011, Buenos Aires), Pinta Air Fair (with Dan Galeria, 2009, New York), Art Basel (with Galerie Denise René, 2010-2011, and with Mara-La Ruche, 2011, Basel), Fiac (also with Denise René, 2010-2011, Paris), ARCO (with Dan Galeria, 2004-2011; with Mara-La Ruche, 2009-2010; and with Galería Cayón, 2010-2011, Madrid) and ArtBo (with Galería Cayón, 2011, Bogotá) fairs.
